Day 13 - Golden Circle - Part 2
Day 13 - Golden Circle - Part 1
I must admit, the last few days of our trip, I got lazy with my recordkeeping. I am going off quick notes, pictures and my parent's blog for these last couple days. First stop on this overcast day, Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. We could see this beach from the Dyrhólaey cliffs we were at yesterday. This was another film location, this time for the movie Noah. Now, I should go back and watch it again, cause I definitely do not remember this place!
Next stop, Seljalandsfoss where you can walk behind the falls, and get drenched in the process.
At Skógafoss, the hike to the top is steep, but the view is amazing, plus with the sun out I saw a double rainbow at the top. I wish I could have kept on going. If I ever go back to Iceland I'm going on some epic hikes! We lunched at the bottom of the falls before heading out to our next glacier.
The Glacier Walk on Sólheimajökull made our third glacier, but a very different experience. The first glacier, we were up in the clouds, all you could see was white at the top. The second, fantastic views, clear skies, then into a cold cave. This last one, a walk from land to glacier passing over ice and scree and then fully into ice loaded with fallen ash come visible with the shifting ice. I liked this one best, definitely. The others had merit, I loved the view of the clear white surface on the Into the Cave tour, but I wasn't really that interested in the tour part of it, just the view from outside. I could have skipped the cave altogether if it wasn't so much warmer down under. This one you experience the melting water and shifting landscape instead of just driving over it.
The wind really picked up after our ‘walk’. It was enough that it picked up sand and created a mild sandstorm, obscuring the horizons, mountains, ocean and all. I'm definitely glad we did the cliffs the day prior with the amazingly clear skies. This windstorm was the backdrop to visit the Plane Crash on Sólheimasandur. Well, I'm SO glad we took the bus, which reminded me of a scene out of Star Wars with a huge wheeled bus, off in the distance, visible through all that sand blowing around. That woulda been a long walk for a miserable little plane wreck through a horrible sand storm. It's a great place to film music videos apparently (as is all of Iceland for filming, really). Justin Beiber made it famous I suppose. And I've seen at least one other music video from an Icelandic band with the same plane. Never seen the Beiber video so I'm glad actually to have found this other video without any relation to Beiber.
Dinner today, a stop at the quick stop 'grocery store'. Or maybe it was an actual full service grocery store. Not sure actually. I was really not interested in another sit down restaurant where I stuff my face full of good food. I guess maybe I was missing homeade meals and everyone else made due as well.
