Our excursion today was to Snaefellsjokul Glacier, up to the top and into the clouds. The bus ride to our first stop was along the shoreline on one side and past cute little baby lambs bouncing along the fields on pastures at the bottom of mountains on the other.
We transferred to another bus in Grundarfjordur before heading up the mountain into Snæfellsnes National Park. Steep gravel roads ran past some nice little waterfalls to where the snow started. We transferred onto an open air snowcat for the climb on the glacier.
The views were absolutely amazing as we came to the top. We could see both north and south sides of the peninsula but alas, pictures were hard to take in the jostling snow cat and just before we reached the top we climbed into the clouds. The view at the top was white. White misty clouds and the white, icy surface of the glacier. The cold, not too bad as at the highest point there was only a light wind.
Our climb back down brought out the same amazing views. And, our stop back in Grundarfjordur included delicious hot coco and "Love balls” so they translated for us. Our stop was in a lovely community center that was a variety of cafe, library, movie house for the small community.
After getting back into town we had lunch on the ship and then went out to Stykkishólmur to check things out. There was the church, Iceland has lots of interesting church architecture, and views all around.
About 10pm the ship was passing some bird cliffs so many of us went out on the observation deck to check them out. It was the first 'swarm' of birds of many. And, it was still pretty bright out even as dusk was finally approaching.
