Day 12 - Golden Circle - Part 1

Day 12 - Golden Circle

Today we slept in. It's the first real sleep-in since I arrived. We have hit the Golden Circle and it looks like everywhere will be filled with lots of busses and other tourists. It’s not so bad when we are the bus, but now, it’s crowded. We've officially joined the masses.

We left the hotel at 10 and visited the powerful Gullfoss waterfall.  And the next stop, the equally full of tourists Geysir.  It's an explosive geyser like Yellowstone's old faithful but occurs every 5-8 minutes and does not go nearly as high or for as long.

For lunch we ate at Fridheimar. You get to eat in the greenhouse alongside the tomatoes that make up their tomato based menu.  You can even cut your own fresh basil to add to the soup.  Magnus said it is popular with Icelanders as well which I think was a great.

We were going to go to another lagoon, the Secret Lagoon.  But, apparently it was a school holiday and bus fulls of kids had come to enjoy the warm waters. Unlike the other two hot springs we enjoyed earlier on the trip, this was more like a local's swimming pool.  Except, instead of splashing and playing and diving everyone was pretty chill. The warm water calms, not invigorates.  We decided to skip it since it was so croweded.

Since we gained a few hours, Magnus took us to the Dyrhólaey Lighthouse with views of the sea.  The weather was fantastic, clear and sunny.  So it was a good choice to visit the cliff top on the way to our hotel.  We ate ate dinner in Vik, a little local place. I tried to Yelp it, but apparentlyYelp doesn't exist in Iceland.  I definitely would have recommended the few places we ate while traveling.
