Day 9 - Djúpivogur - Part 1

Today was an all day bus trip down the coast to Jökulsárlón, a glacier lagoon. The glacier comes right up to a lagoon fed also by the sea at high tide. This was the most touristy spot we’ve been since leaving Reykjavík. If you could ignore the crowd, it was pretty surreal, small hunks of ice floating along.  Before the boat tour in the lagoon we went to the beach where there was a seal swimming around near the shore.

The drive along the coast included swans nesting and one pair already with their babies. Also a ‘comfort’ stop at a hotel that had fabulous views of the glacier tongues gliding down the mountain valleys.

Lunch was on our way back from the lagoon at a hotel restaurant next to a working farm. I finally got up close but not personal with some baby lambs. I still didn’t get very good pictures but they are so cute, fluffy and cuddly looking. There were quite a few bounding away from the bus as we went by on the road as well so I got my fill this day.

We couldn’t linger in town as the captain wanted to head out as soon as possible since the wind was picking up. So, off we sailed, about 30 minutes ahead of time. And, the captain was right. There was some unexpected currents that had the ship rocking quite mightily. Glasses slid and broke in the bar and the table settings in the restaurant had to be reset. The rocking and rolling happened twice, and they thought a third time but that third time wasn’t that bad, that being the only one we were warned about.

The Captain’s Gala dinner started a half hour late. And, the captain had to leave a few times to converse about things. But it was quite enjoyable to sit with Peter again, and this time with the captain also. Tara, yep she easily kept the conversation going if there was a lull, but it was all quite lovely conversation.

They had an awesome crew talent show after dinner. I think that crowd was the biggest for any of the entertainment, plus a few stayed for dancing afterwards as well. The two ladies from New York, Sarah and Shannon, and I started and ended the dance party. Eventually even the captain got on the dance floor. Fun times! Late night shots with the crew at the bar and the three of us was a fun but super late night. Sooo glad I didn’t have the hike excursion the next day.
